Polystyrene insulation is an insulation sheet that is available in two forms.
Expanded polystyrene, and extruded polystyrene. It is used for thermal insulation and acoustic dampening, as well as packaging material and more.
Expanded polystyrene is made up of small beads of polystyrene. It has less density than ext ruded polystyrene, and so is less effective in thermal insulation. However, it is cheaper. Likewise, extruded polystyrene is much denser and is much more effective in thermal insulation as well as acoustic soundproofing.
Expanded polystyrene can be used for many things other than insulation. Because of its light weight, it can be used for packaging when shipping materials. It can also protect you if used as part of a bicycle helmet. This is because it can absorb and dissipate shock easily. Expanded polystyrene is also very durable.
This quality makes it effective and reliable for packaging a massive range of goods. Damp conditions don’t make it lose strength, and EPS is moisture resistant which makes it infallible. EPS also has no odour and is non-toxic. This material is also 98% air which makes it lightweight and adds little noticeable weight to the overall product. This results in less fuel emissions which results in a smaller impact on global warming. Expanded polystyrene is also a great insulator because of its thermal properties. It helps keep food fresh while being delivered, and it also assists in the growth of plants. The pharmaceutical industry also uses expanded polystyrene insulation to package temperature-sensitive materials that need to be transported to different regions around the world.
Expanded polystyrene is also very environmentally friendly. It follows the “Three R’s” with an additional “R” added. It reduces the amount of natural resources used in creating the product. By optimizing the design of the packaging, moulders can reduce EPS usage, in turn, reducing environmental stress as well as cost. EPS can be re-used for multi-product packaging. In garden centres, it is also reused for seed and pot-holding trays. EPS recycling is done by reprocessing the polystyrene and using it as materials such as hardwood replacement for garden furniture. Expanded polystyrene can also be recovered as it is very high in its calorific value. It is much higher than coal, and can safely be burnt in energy recovery units, without emitting toxic fumes.
The common term nowadays “Styrofoam” is actually foamed polystyrene. It is an excellent thermal insulator, and is used in a variety of products. Polystyrene can be used for all sorts of insulation. Home insulation is best done with extruded polystyrene, but expanded polystyrene also works in some areas. Extruded polystyrene offers the best insulation for homes, and expanded offers the most environmentally friendly solution for packaging materials, and for use in everyday life. Polystyrene insulation offers protection of many kinds; protection from cold, protection from damage, etc. Extruded polystyrene insulation is highly recommended for use in your home, and should definitely be used if you have the budget for it.
